Preview :: The Lord of the Rings: Born Of Hope

If you had £25,000 dollars would you think of making a prequel to Peter Jackson's multi-million dollar film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and release it for free?

Probably not.. but the amateur actress and LOTR fangirl Kate Madison did just that. She used £8,000 of her life savings to create a trailer for the film, which she posted on YouTube, and asked for donations from fans to help her finish the fan-flick that is called Born Of Hope. This past December the film was completed:

Born Of Hope was shot in Epping Forest, Essex (seen above) and all over West Stow, Suffolk, and the film's story is based on two paragraphs that Tolkien included in the appendix of his novels that mention the adventures of Arathorn and Gilraen.

This fan-flick showcases a communal and largely volunteer effort that demonstrates the amount of talent and productional work that can be done with a small fraction of the cost that blockbuster films seem to eat up these days. Although the acting might be a bit lackluster and the film seems like a carbon copy blueprint of Jackson's films, instead of taking this chance to create its own aethetically unique take on the novels, it is an incredibly stout feat and an inspiration to all those wanting to get involved in film making.

Plus it is just the right touch of Tolkien that we need to hold us over until Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth/El Orfanato) release their two-part adaptation of The Hobbit that should be out in 2011 and 2012.
