The best minute in :: Man On Wire (2008)

Copyright © 2009 Magnolia Pictures

Man On Wire is more of a lavish visual story than your usual fact providing documentary. The film is directed by James Marsh and based on Philippe Petit's biographical book, To Reach the Clouds, which is the story of his high-wire strut between New York's Twin Towers in 1974.

From start to finish, this film is eloquently narrated as it takes you through the inspiringly daring escapades of Philippe Petit.

It is the epitome of a dreamer's documentary and one that deserves your attention.

The best minutes in :: Un Prophète (2009)

Un Prophète is a gritty little French film from writer and director Jacques Audiard, and although Audiard is not very well known here in the West, Un Prophète is an excellent introduction to his work. We even selected it as our hope for winning the Best Foreign Language Film category at last year's Academy Awards.

"Condemned to six years in prison, Malik El Djebena, part Arab, part Corsican, cannot read or write. Arriving at the jail entirely alone, he appears younger and more fragile than the other convicts. He is 19 years old. Cornered by the leader of the Corsican gang currently ruling the prison, he is given a number of "missions" to carry out, toughening him up and gaining the gang leader`s confidence in the process. Malik is a fast learner and rises up the prison ranks, all the while secretly devising his own plans…"
Make sure you catch this talkie if you haven't already.. because the subtitles in this clip of the film were awwwwwfully done.

The best minute in :: The Proposition (2005)

The Proposition is an excellent film directed by John Hillcoat (The Road), written by renowned musician Nick Cave, and acted out by Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, John Hurt and Danny Huston.

The film takes place in the late 19th century during the convict colony days in the desolate Australian Outback, and although this may not be the best minute in the film, it was one of the few scenes that captures the films assembled tension without giving away much of the plot.

The best minute in :: City Lights (1931)

Although one minute of this film cannot adequately portray the brilliance of Charlie Chaplin's City Lights, this scene is a piece of the best comedic protagonist entrance on film to date. Charlie Chaplin is by far the best physical comedian that we at greenT have seen and this film showcases why:

In 1931 Charlie Chaplin, who was the centre piece in Hollywood's mantle, was facing his toughest audience yet at a time when voice in film was just becoming the trendy thing to do and the Great Depression and recession were finally starting to level out. Chaplin disregarded this new method in film, and flat out made fun of it in the film, by creating his silent film masterpiece entitled City Lights, which was a romantic comedy about a blind girl and a tramp. They don't make 'em like this anymore..

Early last year greenT had the chance to see City Lights preformed live with our local symphony and in no way did the music match the magic on film.
