Janka Nabay, the father and king of modern Bubu music, comes from Sierra Leone and now resides in Philadelphia. He has just released a new 12" called the Bubu King EP, which came out March 9th through True Panther Records, and it is one of the most distinctive EPs that we have heard in a looong while:
"Until now, this music has not been recognized by the West. It has its origin in [ancient] Timini Muslim feasts that Janka attended as a young boy. He is the first to transfer the bubu music into modern popular music. The tones are made from old keyboards and by blowing on carburetor [sic] pipes and bamboo shoots."The sound captured on the Bubu King EP reminds us of minimalist ambient techno that incorporates lyrics spoken in Temne, Krio and English. It is a habitual mending of traditional and contemporary styles and was recorded during the pinnacle years of the Sierra Leone Civil War until it ended in 2002, so there is no doubt that the album is very politically focused, yet seemingly celebratory and definitely fun.
